What is Memory Care?

Memory care is a program that specializes in assisting senior residents with dementia, Alzheimer’s, and related cognitive illnesses. This long-term care option is designed to meet the specific needs of someone who is suffering from memory loss by providing a safe, structured environment.

At Havenwood Heritage Heights, we encourage residents to remain active and engaged by planning appropriate activities, encouraging socialization and offering alternative therapies to reduce anxiety associated with memory loss. Our staff is also available 24/7 to help residents with tasks like dressing and grooming, although they are encouraged to be as independent as possible.

When Is It Time for Memory Care?

It can be difficult to watch a family member struggle with cognitive decline related to Alzheimer’s or dementia, and even more difficult to know when to seek consistent, professional memory care services. As a general rule, however, when cognitive decline is threatening an individual’s safety, it is time for memory care.

Symptoms of dementia are dangerous and can compromise an individual’s ability to live independently. For instance, a family member may forget to take their medications as prescribed or forget to pay the electricity bill. They may also experience balance problems or instances of wandering. If you are noticing any of these symptoms, intervention is necessary.

Memory Care Frequently Asked Questions

How do you help make memory care residents feel safe?

Our memory care staff members are specially trained to create a safe, relaxing environment for seniors with memory loss and dementia. Through daily routines, consistent familiar faces, and 24-hour care, we work to provide a safe, comfortable and calming atmosphere.

When should dementia patients go into memory care?

When memory impairment begins to put an individual’s health and safety at risk, memory care is needed. Wandering, for example, can create dangerous situations for individuals who are unable to find their way back home. This behavior also creates a potential for frequent falls and injuries.
